A Coventry hotel has been branded a ‘car crash’ in scathing online reviews from popular hotel comparison site TripAdvisor. Hylands Hotel on Warwick Road, is a three star hotel close to the city’s War Memorial Park.

The blurb for the hotel on TripAdvisor claims Hylands “is an excellent choice for rest and rejuvenation” which is “well-known for its budget friendly environment”. But from over 450 reviews 350 people who have branded it “terrible” would beg to differ.

A customer named Steve B who stayed their last month wrote on the site: “Please do not do it. It is more of a doss house. Don’t let the name hotel fool you.

“I got to my room, paper ripped from wall, there was mould all along the tops of the windows, shower broken, TV no signal. I told reception three times but nothing was done.

“There was a Nigerian restaurant right under my room banging out music until 4am. The only reason I stayed was because it was booked for.”

Sleeping L wrote in February: “Would have given them two stars for some of the staff were nice (the hotel itself is beyond redemption) but what finished me off was the parking tickets I received for my stay there, despite the fact I entered my reg plate into the system the night I arrived! Please stay away, this place should be closed down!”

In December Adam E wrote: “Staff unwelcoming, rooms smelled of smoke and filled with mould. Would have walked out if the night’s stay was not a complete necessity. Shower was terrible also as barely had any water flow.”

IrishInEdinburgh, who stayed their in December advised: “Just avoid it in general – the rooms look nothing like any of the pictures on their website,” after claiming their room was so squalid, they checked out 15 minutes after checking in.

Martin S also stayed in December and he recommended people “sleep rough instead”. He continued: “The carpets were like those found in a very low class pub. The lights hung off the walls and the chairs were filthy. I wanted a shower but there was no hot water and besides I like my feet too much to walk on the lino flooring.”

Hylands Hotel has been approached for a comment regarding the poor reviews.
