Came to article Cossie DFV, but was crushed to it…then assumed of the engine from the 917, and someone experienced that presently…then thought of….position is, there are a bunch that can be argued here (though DFV wins as a result of ubiquity, longevity, dependability, etcetera.). I’m going to suggest two choices that are not so noticeable, but their effects is considerable: the Coventry Climax 4-cyl, and the VW boxer motor.
Each are (or had been) astoundingly inexpensive, really dependable, easily labored on by everyone with basic equipment…nonetheless equipped to make astounding energy for their dimension by genuine professional motor modifiers, and they had been discovered in a bazillion race vehicles for a long time. And not just entry-level, possibly…even though they have been both of those fantastic motors for all those type of series (System VW, and so forth.). These engines have been utilized in ‘serious race cars’ as well!
An argument could be manufactured for the Jaguar XK engine, too…particularly if you aspect in results/entries. Likely a bunch of other fantastic engines I’m missing, far too….it’s challenging to just point out just one as unequivocal. But, yet again, the DFV will almost certainly win this argument, all attainable components viewed as. You can not dominate ‘the pinnacle of motorsport’ (where by innovation would seem to come about on a race-by-race basis) for 14 frickin a long time without staying anything specific!
VW’s minor flat 4 might not have designed extraordinary electric power, or been The Winningest Race Engine, but its relatively inexpensive value and the point that Volkswagen designed around just one issue 3 billion of them built them great for receiving folks into motorsports.
